The Body Remembers
hat if immune health is less about becoming stronger and more about helping the body rediscover the intelligence of balance? A woman I have been supporting for almost two years recently said something that has stayed with me ever since. She did not ask me to make her stronger. She simply said: “I just want my body to know what to do again.”
Her words touched on something I have observed repeatedly throughout the years I have spent working with people living with autoimmune conditions, persistent post-viral fatigue, or the quiet uncertainty that follows a serious diagnosis.
Very few people ask for greater strength. What they long for is something more subtle: for their body to remember how to regulate itself.
STRENGTH AND MEMORY
For decades, immune health has often been framed as a question of power: boost it, strengthen it, activate it, defend it.
Yet when we look more closely at the intricate edges of immunology, a different picture begins to emerge. One of the immune system’s most remarkable qualities may be its memory and the precision that this memory makes possible.
The immune system is an extraordinarily sophisticated network of cells, tissues and chemical messengers that must constantly interpret information.
Is this substance part of the body or foreign to it? Is this cell healthy or abnormal? Does this situation require a response? And, just as importantly, when is it safe to stand down?
A healthy immune response therefore depends on activation as well as discernment, timing and restraint.
WHEN THE SYSTEM LOSES ITS DIRECTION
Consider what may be happening in some of the conditions people fear most.
In autoimmune disease, the immune system has not simply become “too strong” or inexplicably turned against the body. Its ability to distinguish between self and threat has become disrupted. It is, at least in part, a loss of accurate recognition, a failure of discernment alongside the damaging immune response itself.
In the prolonged aftermath of certain viral infections, the immune system may remain caught within an unresolved response, unable to fully register that the immediate danger has passed. Instead of completing the cycle of activation and recovery, it appears to remain on alert.
Even in the context of cancer, where immune surveillance, the body’s capacity to identify and remove abnormal cells before they become more problematic, is increasingly understood as significant, the issue may also involve clarity.
Does the immune system still recognise what belongs and what does not? Can it identify when intervention is required? And can it respond with sufficient precision without causing unnecessary damage to healthy tissue?

A LANGUAGE THE BODY ALREADY UNDERSTANDS
Since the late 1940s, researchers have explored an intriguing phenomenon: what happens when highly specific immunological information, carried by small messenger molecules produced by immune cells, is introduced into another organism.
The recipient’s immune system appears capable of recognising and responding to aspects of this information, almost as though it were hearing a language it already knew.
These small signalling molecules are often discussed in connection with what became known as transfer factors, low-molecular-weight compounds believed to carry elements of immune information from one organism to another.
Colostrum, the first milk produced by mammals after birth, has been studied as a particularly rich source of immune-supporting compounds. This may help explain a phenomenon observed across generations: breastfed infants tend to benefit from a degree of early immune protection and guidance while their own immune systems are still developing.
This is one of nature’s most elegant forms of biological communication, transferring protection and immunological orientation from one generation to the next.
Precision, however, is essential.
The proposed effect in adults is not attributed to consuming colostrum as though the adult body could process it in the same way as a newborn. Interest has instead focused on specific isolated, low-molecular-weight components contained within it, molecules small enough to be absorbed and biologically recognised in a different way.
ONE MESSAGE ACROSS TWO KINGDOMS
More recently, another question has emerged: could comparable forms of immune-related information exist elsewhere in nature?
After examining hundreds of plant species, researchers reported identifying small messenger peptides in the seeds of Brassica napus, commonly known as rapeseed or canola. These plant-derived compounds have been described as structurally comparable to certain low-molecular-weight factors found in colostrum, suggesting that they may interact with biological systems through related signalling pathways.
If this interpretation is confirmed through further rigorous research, it presents a fascinating possibility.
Nature may have encoded aspects of this specialised biological communication more than once, within mammals and independently within a flowering plant.
In evolutionary biology, a similar solution appearing independently across two very different kingdoms of life can indicate that an underlying mechanism serves an important purpose. Understanding exactly what that purpose may be requires considerably more research.
WHAT THE EVIDENCE ACTUALLY TELLS US
None of this should be presented as a promise.
The research surrounding these molecules spans decades and includes published work in immunology, dermatology and virology. Yet the body of evidence remains uneven. Some studies are thoughtfully designed, while others are small, dated or preliminary. Much of the existing research still awaits the larger, independent and methodologically rigorous clinical trials required to draw definitive conclusions.
No responsible health professional should claim that these compounds cure autoimmune disease, resolve chronic post-viral illness or treat cancer.
Immune-modulating supplements should never be positioned as substitutes for medical diagnosis, appropriate treatment or specialist care.
What some of the evidence suggests, more modestly and honestly, is that access to certain forms of immune-related information may support the immune system’s regulatory processes.
This could mean helping the system distinguish more accurately between threat and non-threat, respond when necessary and withdraw once its work is complete.
This is a quieter and potentially more intelligent proposition than the dramatic promise of “supercharging” immunity: supporting an immune system that responds appropriately.
For someone living with a condition in which immune activity appears to overreact, underreact or remain unresolved, this distinction is far from insignificant.
It is the difference between a system trapped in a state of permanent alarm and one that knows when it is safe to recover. It is the difference between a body that mistakes its own tissue for an enemy and one that can maintain clearer biological boundaries, or between exhaustion that never seems to fully lift and a system that is finally able to complete what it began.
REGULATION IS NOT SUPPRESSION
Immune regulation is sometimes misunderstood as simply calming or suppressing the immune system. True regulation is more sophisticated.
A well-regulated immune system must be capable of mounting a decisive response when genuine danger is present. It must also be able to limit that response so that inflammation does not continue unnecessarily or begin damaging the body it is intended to protect.
Regulation means flexibility. It means having the ability to mobilise and the ability to rest, to recognise and to tolerate, to remember a previous threat without treating every future encounter as an emergency.
This adaptability is one of the foundations of biological resilience.
The goal, therefore, is neither to silence the immune system nor to stimulate it indiscriminately. It is to support the conditions in which it can communicate, distinguish and respond more precisely.
WHAT I SEE IN THE PEOPLE I SUPPORT
I have spent years observing what can happen when a body that appears to have lost some of its regulatory capacity is gently given the opportunity to find its way back.
The changes are rarely dramatic. More often, they appear as fewer flare-ups, infections that no longer linger quite as long as they once did, more consistent energy, recovery that feels less difficult, or a quiet sense, often expressed almost hesitantly, of simply feeling like oneself again.
These experiences are deeply meaningful, but they must also be approached with scientific humility. Individual improvement does not, by itself, prove a mechanism or establish that one intervention will work for everyone.
The immune system is influenced by countless interconnected factors, including genetics, previous infections, metabolic health, sleep, nutrition, environmental exposures, stress, emotional wellbeing and the health of the gut microbiome.
There is rarely one explanation and almost never one universal solution.
This is why functional health requires us to look at the whole person rather than reducing the body to a single diagnosis, marker or symptom. It asks us to remain curious about the relationships between systems while respecting the limits of what science can currently tell us.
RETURNING TO THE INTELLIGENCE OF BALANCE
Perhaps this is the deeper reorientation worth considering.
Health was never truly about becoming stronger than the world around us. It was about the body’s quiet and remarkable capacity to adapt to that world without losing itself.
The body remembers how to heal a wound. It remembers how to raise a fever, produce antibodies and build protection from previous encounters. It remembers when to mobilise its defences and, under healthy conditions, when to let the response subside.
Sometimes, however, chronic illness, prolonged stress, environmental burden or persistent inflammation appears to disrupt this rhythm. The body may not have forgotten entirely, but the signals have become confused. The conversation between its systems is no longer as clear as it once was.
The task may be to create the conditions in which the body’s own regulatory intelligence can become accessible again rather than forcing it towards greater intensity.
That begins with respecting the body as an intelligent, communicative system.
It means asking not only, “How can I fight this?” but also, “What information might my body be receiving, and what does it need in order to feel safe enough to return to balance?”
The answer is rarely found in one dramatic intervention. More often, it begins with small, consistent choices such as restorative sleep, nourishing food, appropriate movement, emotional regulation, reduced exposure to unnecessary stressors and carefully selected professional support.
Perhaps the woman I have accompanied for almost two years expressed it most clearly. She did not want her body to fight harder. She wanted it to remember what to do.
And that may be one of the most profound definitions of healing we have.
