The Moment I Began to Ask a Different Question
I REMEMBER BEING TOLD I MIGHT NEVER WALK AGAIN. BOTH MY LEGS HAD BEEN SHATTERED IN A MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT, AND THE ROAD BACK WAS ALREADY DIFFICULT WHEN A SERIOUS INFECTION PUT MY LIFE AT RISK.
WHEN YOUR BODY CAN NO LONGER DO WHAT YOU HAVE ALWAYS EXPECTED OF IT
rdinary things take on a different meaning. Standing. Taking a step. Imagining a future. I wanted to recover, but I also wanted to understand what was happening inside me as I faced pain and fear. How much influence did I have over my own response? Could I learn to meet this experience differently?

Those questions stayed with me long after the immediate crisis had passed. I began studying consciousness, neuroscience and the ways people change. I was drawn to practices that had endured for centuries, but I also wanted to examine them in light of what we can measure today. Where do ancient wisdom and modern evidence meet? Where do they tell different stories? I believe both questions deserve an honest answer.
“Living longer has little appeal if we overlook the quality of those years“
My recovery taught me that rebuilding a life involves more than addressing one problem at a time. Pain can affect sleep. Poor sleep changes how we handle stress. Stress can alter our attention, our relationships and the decisions we make. A person may want to perform better at work, yet have no space in their day to recover. Another may understand the belief holding them back but still feel its force whenever they face a difficult moment.
THE DR ESPEN METHOD
This is why I have become interested in the connections between the different areas of our lives. Through the Dr Espen Method, I explore eight areas of life together, looking at how change in one can support, or unsettle, another. The method is shared globally through The Quantum Academy’s seminars, retreats and online programmes. My aim is to help people make changes they can carry into their daily lives, long after an event has ended.
Breathwork offers an immediate way to explore this. We breathe constantly, yet our breathing often changes before we have even recognised that we are under pressure. In the Quantum Breathwork series on Gaia and in live sessions, I invite people to observe that connection for themselves. What happens to their attention when they slow down? What do they notice in their body? A shared experience in a room can make those questions more vivid than a lecture ever could.
The same curiosity shapes my work with leaders and organisations. We often talk about peak performance as though it means sustaining maximum effort. In my experience, the more useful question is how to sustain the capacity to think clearly, communicate well and recover between demands. The state a leader brings into a meeting can affect the people around them. Learning to recognise stress and respond to it is therefore relevant well beyond personal wellbeing.
I also think differently about longevity now. Living longer has little appeal if we overlook the quality of those years. Sleep, breath, stress and recovery influence how much energy we have for the people and purposes that matter to us. They are ordinary parts of life, which makes them easy to neglect.
In July 2026, I received a knighthood; an honour I carry as Sir Espen Wold-Jensen. I am grateful for it. Still, the question that guides my work is the one I began asking during my recovery: what becomes possible when we understand our patterns more deeply and take an active part in changing them?
I cannot tell another person exactly what their path will look like. I know that pain can narrow our sense of the future; I have lived that feeling. I also know that a difficult chapter need not become the whole story.
Mine began to change when I started asking questions.
“What becomes possible when we understand our patterns more deeply and take an active part in changing them?”
About the author
Across his live experiences and online programs, Dr Espen’s work has impacted more than 3.5million lives worldwide, guiding people to awaken their highest potential, reclaim their energy, reconnect with themselves, and transform pain into power and purpose.
His broader mission is to contribute to an evolution in how humanity understands health, consciousness, healing, and human potential, moving beyond the idea that we are simply passive participants in our circumstances and toward an understanding of the extraordinary intelligence and possibility that exists within each individual.
The Dr Espen Method delivered globally through The Quantum Academy, a world-class series of seminars, retreats, and online programs that integrate neuroscience, quantum physics, breathwork, and ancient wisdom to produce measurable transformation across all eight areas of life.
